Introduction:

Dal Fry is one of the most popular Indian dishes. It is a spicy lentil soup made with split lentils and tempered spices. It is a nutritious, filling and delicious meal that is perfect for lunchtime.

Ingredients:

– 1 cup of lentils (masoor dal or arhar dal)
– 3 cups of water
– 1 large onion, chopped
– 1 tbsp of ginger-garlic paste
– 2 medium-sized tomatoes, chopped
– 2-3 green chilies, chopped
– 1/2 tsp of turmeric powder
– 1 tsp of red chilli powder
– 1 tsp of cumin powder
– 1 tsp of coriander powder
– Salt to taste
– 2 tbsp of ghee or oil
– A pinch of asafoetida
– 1 tsp of cumin seeds
– 4-5 cloves of garlic

Recipe:

1. Rinse the lentils thoroughly in cold water and drain the water. In a pressure cooker, add the lentils, water, turmeric and salt.
2. Close the pressure cooker with the lid and pressure cook the lentils for 3-4 whistles or until they are soft and well cooked.
3. In a separate pan, heat the ghee or oil. Add the cumin seeds and asafoetida until they crackle.
4. Add chopped onions, garlic and green chilies and sauté until the onions turn golden brown.
5. Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté until the raw smell goes away.
6. Add the chopped tomatoes and sauté until they are soft and mushy.
7. Add red chilli powder, cumin powder, coriander powder and salt to the tomato mixture.
8. Mix well and cook until the oil separates from the spices.
9. Add the cooked lentils to the tomato mixture.
10. Mix well and let it simmer for 5-6 minutes on medium heat.
11. Garnish with chopped cilantro and serve hot with steamed rice or naan.
